Crawl Space French Drain for Macon homeowners
A French drain is a simple idea done properly. A trench around the perimeter of the crawl space, a perforated pipe in the bottom, washed stone packed around it, and a continuous fall toward wherever the water is going to leave. Water always takes the easiest path, and stone around a pipe is far easier than the soil beside it.
In Macon the design depends on which side of the Fall Line your house sits on. North and west it is Piedmont clay that will not let water move, so the stone bed is doing most of the work and the run has to be continuous. East and south toward the Ocmulgee the ground is sandier and water arrives faster, so the drain has to be sized for volume.
The drain is the collection half of the job. Where the lot has fall we discharge by gravity and no pump is involved at all. Where it does not, the drain feeds a sump basin and the pump provides the exit. We measure the fall on site before deciding, because a drain built on a guess ends up holding water.
